Melani’s Senior Caregiver position offers a chance for experienced carers to make a difference, providing support to a family with a loved one facing dementia. The position is part-time, live-out, and comes with negotiable weekly pay based on your experience. Flexibility is key, and applicants should be comfortable with on-call schedules.
The ideal caregiver must be fluent in Afrikaans, hold a valid driver’s license, and be prepared to run errands, help with light housekeeping, and cook when needed. Previous experience—at least two years paid—is mandatory, with preference for candidates who’ve worked with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or similar conditions. Men and women aged 34 and over are welcome to apply.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Caring for an elderly client with dementia means each day presents new challenges and rewards. Responsibilities include emotional support—ensuring the patient’s dignity and self-worth are upheld at all times.
You’ll relieve the family’s primary carer, helping them recharge and learn techniques for handling dementia with patience and understanding. Duties include running errands, grocery shopping, and preparing nutritious meals as required.
Light housekeeping may be needed, including washing dishes or sweeping. Beyond physical care, offering companionship and a listening ear are essential parts of the job. Administering medication and assisting with mobility or hygiene needs are also regular tasks.
Advantages of the Role
The flexibility and negotiable pay rate make this an attractive prospect for experienced caregivers seeking meaningful, rewarding work without committing full-time. Your expertise is valued, and your schedule can accommodate other obligations.
This role lets you make a tangible difference in a family’s daily life. Teaching carers and empowering both the patient and their loved ones is deeply fulfilling and helps you further develop professional, practical skills in dementia care.
Challenges & Considerations
Working with dementia patients can be emotionally taxing, especially on days where memory loss or confusion is significant. Patience and emotional resilience are crucial traits for success in this role.
Another consideration is the on-call and as-needed aspect, which may require you to adjust your availability at short notice. Balancing this flexibility with other commitments may be challenging for some candidates.

If you are a skilled caregiver with a passion for supporting seniors living with dementia, and you appreciate flexibility and variety in your work, Melani’s Senior Caregiver offer could be a rewarding fit.
